You may have seen that Autocar has just taken on a long-term test MG6, to be run by Steve Cropley, who seems pretty enthusiastic about his highly equipped, shiny red 5dr diesel TSE so far.
If that’s piqued your interest in this almost unknown MG, you should take a look at the Motorpoint website for a bit of further temptation.
Motorpoint sells nearly new used cars at pretty keen prices, and they don’t get a lot keener than the numbers attached to no less than 75 MG 6s it has in stock, some with up to 15,000 miles on their odometers, others bearing no more than a delivery distance.
You won’t find a diesel there (yet) but the 1.8 petrols come with all trim levels, including the generously kitted TSE pack.
Among them are no less than 27 delivery miles 1.8 TSE four door MG 6s; this version was optimistically labelled Magnette at its launch in memory of the rather more worthy ZA and ZB MG saloons of the 1950s.
These cars are £10,999 apiece, saving you almost £9000 on the list price. If £11k still seems a little too much to risk paying for a rapidly depreciating MG 6, consider one with 12,000 miles or so.
Settle for the entry-level 1.8-litre S, and you can have a five-door with under 12k on the clock for a mere £6699. Or you can have an SE for £7499. That’s a huge amount of car for low-end Dacia Sandero money, and one that has a fine chassis too, even if its engine is coarse and its interior rather plasticy.
You’d probably still lose quite a lot if you bought and sold on after a year, but if you kept it for three or more, this would be very cheap motoring, and with a splash of dynamic entertainment too.

At 25% of the value after 3 years you would be insane to put your money down on a car like that beforehand.
Still I think you would be pushed to find a 3 year old car of its size for 5k. In that sense it is a bargain.
But I'd rather spend 5k on a B&O TV.

The main reason I have had a few Rover's is due to their very low prices secondhand. Its always been the case.
It made in Britain so its crap, now its made in China its still crap. Generalised nonsense!
So if this continues with the New MG's then great!
Out of the 6 MGR car's I have owned, only one has been a dud, despite the manufacturers reputation.
Now the Leon I would be interested in, but the rest of the MG6's competition is oh so dull, slug shaped astras and focups.
And the BMW 1/3 series/Audi A2/4 oh so pretentious and common.

Pretentious and common...?,yeah!, because they are well built, drive well, hold there value better, whose going to be daft enough to shell out £20K for a Magnette and then 3yrs down the line with 30,000 on the clock, faint when they are told it worth less than five grand!, i'd sooner be common and pretentious in that case!
MG6 Magnette
Enjoy your new MG Prodigy, I had an MG 1.8T Magnette rental for 3/4 days a while ago.The hire company described it as a Marmite car from the reaction of their customers and I could see their point; I enjoyed driving it a lot, it was comfortable, had a great ride, handled nicely and went well enough and has stuck in my mind enough to make me think think vaguely about buying one so this article caught my interest.
The biggest downer for me was the insanely sharp throttle that meant the thing would go instantly from tick over to massive rpm unless one was unusually delicate with the pedal ; it also needed 6 gears and the internal handles needed two firm tugs before the doors would open which got me every time.
I agree with the earlier comments that it will be good for MG get a few more of these on the road so that people can see what they are really like &, from my brief experience, I think you'll have fun driving yours.

I posted some figures for future values of the MG6,they were for the Magnette, better buying a second hand BMW for the price of the Magnette new.
