Rugged new crossover brings night-vision, big ground clearance and physical climate controls

Omoda has revealed the X concept as a showcase of its new ‘Cyber Mecha’ design language, hinting at a new and more rugged range of models.

Although the design language made its debut on the Omoda 4, which was shown at last week’s Paris motor show ahead of its UK launch next year, the X moves it on with more aggressive surfacing and chunky body cladding.

It has been conceived as an occasional off-roader, with high-set suspension and tall all-terrain tyres giving it 200mm of ground clearance.

Omoda suggested the more aggressive look will allow it to tap a wider range of buyers, saying it's “an expression of personal style”.

Although the notion of an urban-focused crossover capable of light off-roading is far from new, having been popularised in the late 1990s, it has proven fruitful for rivals marques such as Dacia and Skoda in recent years.

To this end, Omoda claims the X is capable of lugging 75kg on its roof and it is “intended” to tow up to 1800kg.

Inside, it has a 10.25in digital instrument panel and a 13.2in infotainment touchscreen. Unlike the 4, it also has physical controls for the climate control system and the seat heating and ventilation – hinting at it having been developed for the European market, which places greater value on such touchpoints.

It also brings an infrared night-vision system that can detect hazards such as wild animals at a distance of up to 90m.

Omoda X – rear quarter

Omoda has yet to confirm what powers the X, but it's likely to use the same 221bhp hybrid powertrain as the 4.

It added that the X is only a concept for now – despite its production-ready look – and that it has yet to decide whether any road-going version will come to the UK.

However, it would provide the Chinese brand with another string in its bow as it looks to consolidate its rapid ascent into the nation's mainstream.

It arrived here only in late 2024 alongside sibling brand Jaecoo, yet it was the UK’s 23rd best-selling brand between January and the end of September this year. That put it ahead of long-established brands such as Citroën, Mazda and Suzuki.
