New concept car, to be revealed at Paris motor show, will put a fresh spin on Multiplas of the past

Fiat is reinventing the Multipla as a cross between a pick-up truck and an SUV.

The new Multiplay concept will take inspiration from the radical Multipla MPV of 1998 as well as its progenitor, the 600 Multipla of 1956, in showcasing a "new concept of mobility".

It will “combine the open load space and outdoor versatility of a pick-up with the comfort and flexibility of an SUV”, Fiat added, referencing the previous Multiplas' ability to carry a large number of people in a compact package.

The Multiplay will be aimed at prospective ‘lifestyle’ buyers who require a practical family car that can also be packed with leisure equipment for use at the weekend.

A teaser image released by Fiat leaves much to the imagination: it shows only a graphic of the 1998 Multipla intersecting with the 1956 Multipla at their rear ends.

The Multiplay isn't to be confused with the Multiplina, the four-seat quadricycle inspired by the 600 Multipla that the Italian brand showed in a presentation earlier this year.

The new concept will be revealed at the Paris motor show, opening on 12 October.

It will sit alongside the new Grizzly SUV, and it's possible that it's based on that car.

Two years ago, Fiat revealed a similarly conceived pick-up alongside the Fastback SUV concept, which hinted at the design of the Grizzly.
