The Ford Mustang V8 GT has taken top spot for the most viewed reviews on Autocar for the week ending 6 November. Read below to find out what joined it in the top five.
1 – Ford Mustang V8 GT
The Ford Mustang has finally reached the UK to be tested on this country's notoriously fickle road surfaces. The V8 we've driven is the left-hand-drive version with 415bhp; we'll have to wait a little longer to test the right-hand-drive version, which has to make do with just 410bhp.
As you would expect from a Mustang, the engine is the headline act, with the tuneful block happy to apply itself. Re-engineering the chassis for this generation Mustang has certainly improved the V8 GT’s abilities to corner and cope with the British roads, but is it enough to out manoeuvre its European counterparts?
2 – Volkswagen Golf 1.4 150 TSI R Line
Volkswagen’s Golf GT gets a new £995 outfit in this iteration. The Volkswagen Golf is essentially the GT that VW sells fitted with some R finery, including a bodykit and suspension tweaks. But the star of this review is the 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine, producing 148bhp and 184lb ft of torque.
Clever technology such as active cylinder control is fitted to this more aggressive-looking Golf; it turns this four-pot into a two-cylinder motor when on part throttle between 1000-4000rpm, or up to speeds of 80mph. Throw in an infotainment system fitted with sat-nav and a three-year subscription to VW’s Car-Net service - which allows you to keep track of weather, traffic and parking updates - and it all seems like a neat little package.
But one question remains: is it really worth the £25,000 price that Volkswagen is charging?
3 – Audi R8 V10 Plus
Third on the list is the new Audi R8 V10 Plus, which has the difficult task of following in the large footsteps left by its older siblings. For starters, Audi has done away with the V8 and manual gearbox found in older iterations, citing limited demand for them. Instead it has matched the 602bhp V10 unit with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Find out if this R8 can leave the same lasting impression as the previous generation, as we test it on rain-soaked French roads.
4 – Range Rover SDV8 SVAutobiography
Land Rover has decided that it wants to raise the standards set by its Range Rover, by launching a new flagship model called the SVAutobiography. The new top-of-the-range SUV is available in short- or long-wheelbase forms, with three engines (a V6 hybrid diesel, a V8 diesel or a supercharged V8 petrol), and is handcrafted at Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle facility in Coventry.
