2016 World Champion makes a surprise move to step away from F1; thoughts turn to who will fill his seat

Nico Rosberg is retiring from Formula 1 in a surprise move following his World Championship win.

The 31-year-old German announced his decision to depart the sport on Facebook this afternoon, stating that his proudest achievement was this year’s title win.

Mercedes-AMG F1 confirms Valtteri Bottas for 2017

“Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One World Champion,” he said. “Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I’ve made it. I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right.”

Rosberg leaves after 206 races in the world’s top formula with 23 wins and the 2016 title to his name.

“The only thing that makes this decision in any way difficult for me is because I am putting my racing family into a tough situation,” he continued. “But [Mercedes executive director] Toto [Wolff] understood. He knew straight away that I was completely convinced and that reassured me.”

Rosberg’s unexpected move leaves a seat at constructor’s championship winning team Mercedes open for the taking. Mercedes is yet to reveal who will partner Lewis Hamilton for its 2017 campaign.

How sad

Having read the postings in this discussion, how sad to see so many deeply offensive and personal comments have been made. I really expect a magazine of Autocar's stature to promptly moderate such language on their forums. It seems that all online discussions involving Lewis Hamilton degenerate into such rude and divisive verbal warfare. It's a shame for those who post thoughtful and constructive analysis.

I guess he couldn't race with

I guess he couldn't race with someone who he felt he couldn't get on with and i guess lewis feels the same and might even be happy from his decision. There has been rivalry with lewis and nico for some time now and with 2 crashes, not obeying orders, it seems Mercedes completely understands.

My temperatures fine just

My temperatures fine just dickhead, your way too far down the food chain to get anybody worked up aren't you Dilly. I have the intelligence to look at it objectively, as a Lewis Hamilton fan not a Rosbergs, and come to the logical conclusions than just puke up the first lazy arse comment that your thick shit brain comes up with. When will an Alpha male like yourself respond with an actual answer to the questions being asked of you rather than skirt around the edges and spout more crap?? All you have done is show yourself as a dumb fucking hypocrite with no understanding, your very first spastic response highlighted that as you accused another of being something you had already shown to be yourself. What a fucking retard!! So again I ask you what you have achieved on a professional level to be calling a current world champion a coward?? So what is it fuckbrain? You going to answer the questions or spout more worthless thickshit nonsense?? I don't hold out much hope for you to be honest, dumb fuck!!

Truth hurts pal

I've told you why I believe Rosberg to be a coward but your brain is too underdeveloped to understand. No one has skirted around anything. Who uses the word spastic nowadays. You must have a member of your family who is one.

Oi spastic!

A true competitor or champion does not pack it in after winning his one and only title. His retirement sums him up perfectly and although it surprised a few people when you look at his beta male character its not really a surprise.

Only a true competitor and a champion would be in the position to be an F1 title holder, only a spastic would fail to realise that! Only a complete spastic would fail to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and above all else courage it would require to even get to the point where you have earned a drive in F1 let alone to win the title. Only a spastic like yourself would fail to see that the cowardly thing for Rosberg to do would be carry on regardless with his heart not in it thus risking both himself and the drivers around him just for the sake of another pay day or trying to prove something he doesn't even feel the need to prove to spastics like you. Only a spastic like yourself would accuse others of being a "Keyboard warrior" and a "beta male" whilst being one themselves at the very same time! Only a spastic like yourself with a brain too underdeveloped would fail to understand! Even though I wanted Lewis to win I'd readily admit that he is a poor excuse for a sportsman and that makes him less of a person, having a spastic like you spout shit on his behalf will never change that!
