The diesel-powered Infiniti EX baby SUV will cost from £35,975.

The Infiniti EX30d has a compacted graphite iron block, which saves weight and improves refinement. It is powered by a 235bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine which produces 406lb ft of torque from 1750rpm. It averages 33.2mpg, emits 224g/km of CO2 and hist 0-62mph in 7.9sec.

Infiniti has also expanded the EX range with the GT and GT Premium models.

The GT level adds leather upholstery, electric and heated front seats and an electrically adjustable steering column.

GT Premium adds what Infiniti calls its Safety Shield program, which includes intelligent cruise control, intelligent brake assist, lane departure prevention and forward collision warning, plus a high-speed sat-nav system.

The diesel EX goes on sale from July, and diesel models are expected to account for 80 per cent of EX sales.

Hilton you can be amusingly sure of yourself. Nick's point was this is a very high entry price for a new brand that seems to lag behind the direct competition. You make a point that the BMW X1 seems more in line. The top spec BMW X1 comes in at under £30k. It's faster and has lower emissions and is much better looking than this vehicle.

The figures you quote for the Infiniti are: It averages 33.2mpg, emits 224g/km of CO2 and hist 0-62mph in 7.9sec.

£29,975 Diesel 44.8 mpg 167 CO2 and 0 - 62 in 7.3
and no I don't work for BMW but I do like to see good comparisions and balanced views in car magazines.

I think it is a fair take on the Germans by Infiniti. It does not excel in the space and efficiency departments but it makes out for it in the equipment and design ones. I had a look at the Audi and in terms of looks alone they were right to make an advertisement with a box. I am sure that the diesel power engines will improve in the Infiniti brand – Daimler-Renault/Nissan anyone?

Nick, you can be amusingly trenchant, but I'm driving around in the Autocar Infiniti at the moment and I can tell you you've got it wrong. I stepped into the EX this evening after four days in middle Europe and it was a breath of fresh air.

It may be a bit small on the inside, but it's a delight to drive. It's a proper front-mid engined chassis and seriously well engineered.

Incidentally, I was looking at a taped-up X3 prototype in a Munich car park this morning. It's surprisingly big. I hear the X1 is doing the business for Beamer. That car is much more in tune with the times.

Nick's posts may well be amusingly trenchant but any regular forum visitor will agree they have all the balance and credibility of the input of the late lamented Hyundaismoke.

What's particularly noticeable is how his levels of vitriol aimed at any particular car increases in direct proportion to a brand or model's ability to compete with German marques.

I noticed he has taken a particular dislike to the Peugeot RCZ which I recon will be a huge success but will take sales off the lower end of the TT range and the Scirocco and we all know he's going to detest the very able and interesting Honda CR-Z
