The BMW i8 will cost more than 100,000 euros (£80,000) when it goes on sale in 18 months, head of sales and marketing Ian Robertson has confirmed.
“It is a super sports car and will be priced accordingly,” said Robertson. “The final price isn't decided but it will be priced up there with similar machinery.”
BMW’s flagship ‘i’ car will use a hybrid driveline likely to combine BMW’s upcoming 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with the same electric motor used by the i3.
Performance figures will rival those of the BMW M3 – 0-62mph in 4.8sec and a top speed limited to 155mph – but it won’t be the firm’s fastest production model. That accolade will remain with the twin-turbocharged V8-powered M5.
But with combined fuel economy of over 75mpg – thanks in part to extensive use of lightweight carbonfibre - and a CO2 emission rating of only 99g/km, it will certainly be among the company’s most frugal production cars.
