The Football World Cup kicks off in Russia later this week, but Autocar has already staged the ultimate national showdown – with Australia taking a shock victory.
This week’s issue of Autocar contains our inaugural World Cup of Used Cars. We picked a second-hand car to represent each of the 32 nations that will compete in Russia, and then pitched them against each other in the ultimate battle of national pride.
The entries were diverse: rather than relying on youth as it will in Russia, England went with experience and entered a McLaren F1. Perennial powerhouse Germany called on the incredible Porsche 959, Argentina wheeled out an Ika Torino and, thanks to some creative nationality rules, Iceland fielded a Toyota Hilux Arctic Truck.
Yet as the contest played out, an unlikely contender emerged. Australia might be a huge outsider for the World Cup, but the mighty Holden Monaro proved far more competitive in our Used Car contest than the Socceroos have in international football.
To find out how the Monaro claimed a famous victory for Australia in the inaugural Autocar World Cup of Used Cars, check out this week’s magazine. It’s available on newsstands in the UK now, or worldwide via digital edition.
And, unlike the football World Cup, you don’t have to wait four years for another version of Autocar – it’s published every week. Click here to score our latest subscription offers.
