The Jaguar I-Pace has been declared the winner of the inaugural German Car of the Year award.
The new award, voted for by a panel of 14 independent motoring journalists, crowned the electric-powered I-Pace from a group of five finalists that also included the Audi A6, Volkswagen Touareg, Peugeot 508 and hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo.
The final five candidates were chosen from an original group of 59 new cars introduced to the German market within the past year.
The I-Pace distanced itself from the second-placed Audi A6 and third-placed Volkswagen Touareg with high scores in the categories “driveline”, “handling” and “significance”.
With two electric motors – one operating on the front wheels and another serving the rear wheels – the 4680mm-long five-door crossover offers a combined 397bhp and 516lb ft of torque.
With a 90kWh lithium ion battery consisting of 36 individual cell modules mounted low within its bespoke platform, the new Jaguar also offers a range of 280 miles.
“As a relatively small manufacturer to have won this award against strong international competition shows our engineers and designers with the I-Pace have put in a strong performance," Jaguar CEO Ralf Speth said in his acceptance speech. "It makes us very proud to hear the first all-electric model from Jaguar has been awarded the title 2019 German Car of the Year”.

I-Pace made in Austria a factor???
OK as a Brit; I know that the Jag I-Pace is the best.
And it's very unusual that the Germans gave it COTY, but was the "made in Austria" tag helpful in them making the choice???

Probably claimed it as a "Teutonic" vehicle, wonder how many Belgian built Audis and US made Mercs & Beemers they give awards to :) :)

All that doom and gloom about JLR going bankrupt and stuck in the last century etc.
Wonder how that person feels who posted on this very website that Jaguar are struggling to sell I-Paces to such an extent they've given one to Andy Murray and Waymo amongst others.

This is great news for the JLR brand and UK engineering especially with Brexit going on and shows that we do have the capabilities to take on the big German car brands when it comes to new technology and whether we like electric vehicles or not it is the imminent future for now.
