Twenty thousand EV sales using the grant doesn’t sound that impressive in the context of more than 300,000 total car sales, and considering that some of these extra sales will be self registrations. The. Industry is still a long way short of meeting the 28% government target for the year, so this begs the question what happens next. Will the companies simply pay the fines for not meeting the target, will firms suddenly reduce ICE car availability, or introduce long waiting times extending into the new year?
With many better value longer range EVs now becoming available, maybe the solution would be to better educate buyers about the practicalities of EV ownership rather than to introducing expensive subsidies?
