Learn more about Mitsubishi’s family-friendly mid-size SUV, and how it’s perfect for long road trips and off-road driving

In November, we took three heroes from Mitsubishi’s diverse range of rugged and capable SUVs to the heart of the Lake District, following two extreme triathletes on a gruelling training session from Ullswater lake to Kirkstone peak.

It’s time to take a closer look at one of the stars of that adventure – the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

With an eye-catching design, a comfortable spacious interior, and a wealth of technology that makes driving easier and safer, this mid-size SUV is perfect for long journeys with friends and family. It’s also a highly capable 4x4 too, meaning you can keep exploring even when the roads get rough.

Stylish, spacious and comfortable

The arrival of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross marked the start of a new design direction for the brand – heavily influenced by Japanese craftsmanship. Its sharp distinctive character lines are complemented by rugged skid plates and wheel-arch mouldings that highlight the Eclipse Cross’s off-road pedigree.

The stylish interior features a high console and a lofty driving position to give added confidence to the driver, while a twin power panoramic glass sunroof for front and rear passengers (on the Eclipse Cross 4 trim) brings even more light into the cabin.

The Eclipse Cross has Smartphone Link Display Audio fitted as standard. You can seamlessly connect a smartphone with the dash-mounted screen, letting you control apps for music, maps and live traffic, calls, voicemail and texts with either the touch-pad controller or voice commands**. A premium Rockford Fosgate 9-speaker system is available on the Eclipse Cross 4 for even more acoustic performance.

There’s also plenty of space for passengers and cargo, with up to 448 litres (VDA) of load volume and 60:40 split-rear seats that slide forward easily to add 20cm of additional load length.

Confident on the open road

With a 1.5-litre petrol turbo engine that offers 120PS and 250Nm of torque – allied to a choice of manual and automatic transmissions and four-wheel-drive on selected trims – the Eclipse Cross lets you pick the right blend of performance and efficiency for your needs.

Mitsubishi’s range of advanced driver assistance and safety technology has been designed to make driving on open roads easier, more relaxing and safer, with Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning fitted as standard, and Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist and Blind Spot Warning available on the Eclipse Cross 4.

Does this striking, high-value entrant leave the compact crossover set in its shade?

An advanced head-up display (available on the Eclipse Cross 3 and 4 trims) delivers even more information into the drivers’ eye-line, helping you keep your eyes on the road more of the time, while a reversing camera – upgraded to a 360-degree camera with Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the Eclipse Cross 4 – give you an added degree of confidence in urban environments.

With all this advanced technology and seven airbags, the Eclipse Cross has earned itself a five-star Euro NCAP rating, with some of the highest scores in its class for adult protection (97%) and pedestrian safety (80%).

Ready for rough terrain

The Eclipse Cross is also a true off-roader, with on-demand 4x4 technology (available on the Eclipse Cross 3 auto and 4 auto trims) that has been honed with Mitsubishi’s decades of off-road experience.

It directs power and braking across the wheels to give more torque to the wheels with most grip. As a result, you get enhanced dynamic performance on the open road, with a greater degree of confidence and stability when the surface gets slippery.

In normal conditions, it splits the power 80:20 front-to-rear for improved efficiency and straight-line stability, sending more power to the rear when needed for enhanced cornering. The dedicated ‘Snow’ and ‘Gravel’ modes deliver more power to the rear for increased traction when things get tough.

With 183mm of ground clearance and 400mm of wading depth, the Eclipse Cross is easily capable of tackling rough terrain. A towing capacity of up to 1,600kg is further evidence that Mitsubishi’s mid-size SUV is not just stylish, spacious comfortable and practical. It’s eminently capable, too.
