Swift Sport leads warm hatch charge

If hot hatches are starting to leave you with singed fingers, then Suzuki might have the answer with this, the Swift Sport.

This is the first time we've seen the European-specification three-door Sport. It's a tamer proposition than cars like Renault's Clio 197, since it has a relatively modest 125bhp 1.6-litre engine under the bonnet.

That doesn't mean it can't be a compelling proposition, though. When Steve Cropley drove the five-door Swift Sport prototype last summer, he praised its 'sporty chassis, quick-responding engine and brisk gearbox'.

And of course, Suzuki is likely to price the car aggresively. When you consider that it could undercut rivals like Citroen's £11,995 C2 VTS by up to £1000, then it probably merits a look.

You'll have to wait a little while longer to do that, though. The Euro-spec Swift Sport will make its first public appearance at the Paris motor show next month, with sales starting in the autumn.
