Mazda continues its roll-out of frugal SkyActiv technology with the introduction of a smaller-capacity diesel engine in its forthcoming supermini

The next Mazda 2 will receive a new 1.5-litre clean diesel engine from the Japanese manufacturer's SkyActiv range when it goes on sale in the UK early next year.

First unveiled in March at the Geneva motor show alongside the Mazda Hazumi concept – which itself previewed the new Mazda 2 – the SkyActiv-D 1.5 unit shares much with the 2.2-litre oil burner that's currently offered in the Mazda CX-5, Mazda 6 and Mazda 3.

The new engine will be capable of producing a maximum power output of 103bhp at 4000rpm and maximum torque of 184lb ft at 1500-2500rpm.

New innovations for the smaller-displacement engine include an expanded homogenous lean burn range, even less mechanical resistance, and new insulation technology to counter the increased cooling loss associated with a smaller engine.

The Mazda 2 will come equipped with the full suite of Mazda's frugal SkyActiv technology, including six-speed automatic and manual transmission and the fuel-saving i-stop stop-start and i-sloop brake-energy regeneration systems.

The Mazda 2 equipped with the SkyActiv-D 1.5 will initially go on sale in Japan, where Mazda expects its new clean diesel-powered supermini to achieve the best fuel economy of any combustion engine-powered vehicle available in Japan, excluding hybrids and microcars.

Car review

Back in 2008 the Mazda 2 was voted World Car of the Year. Considering the car’s engineering thoroughness and individuality, that shouldn’t be a surprise.

Eco specials

I hope Mazda have engineered this engine to fit their larger SkyActive platforms; it will also them to create Eco special versions of the 3 and maybe even the 6. I also wonder if they have a higher output version (say around 125BHP) planned to fit between this 105BHP version and the lower powered version of the 2.2d (148BHP). Will be interesting to see how low the official CO2 levels are.
