Ford's supercar beats 360 Modena in Autocar shoot out

Autocar has been one of the first magazines in the world to put the Ford GT through its paces in a comparison test - and it's sensationally beaten the supercar establishment first time out. According to Autocar’s senior contributing editor Andrew Frankel the Ford GT ‘looked better, went faster, was easier to drive and a whole lot less scary’ than the Ferrari 360 Modena.

Designed to celebrate Ford's centenary, the Blue Oval’s all-new supercar will arrive in Europe in October 2004 carrying an estimated cost of £100,000. Power comes from a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 producing 500bhp and 500 lb ft of torque. It hits 60mph in just 3.8secs and should top out at over 200mph.

Its victory over the Ferrari harks back to the days of the original Ford GT40. That was a car conceived out of spite, designed to beat Ferrari on the race track after the Italians reneged on a deal that would have led to Ford buying the Maranello operation. The revenge eventually paid off: the GT40 ended up having four straight Le Mans wins in a row from 1966 to 69.
