Currently reading: Citroën C6 aim low

Citroen’s new C6 will be one of the most exclusive executive cars on the road, says the French maker. But it claims to be entirely happy that this will translate as modest sales.

The C6 will cost around £30,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next year. There will only be two engines on offer – a 208bhp 2.7-litre diesel and a 215bhp 3.0-litre petrol. Both engines get a new six-speed automatic gearbox.

Citroën says it will not chase fleet buyers and expects annual sales to be in the hundreds rather than thousands.

Although it is based on PSA’s biggest ‘3’ platform, the C6 is appreciably bigger than even the C5 saloon at 4.91m long with a 2.9m wheelbase. The 1.86m width gives the car a very striking presence in the metal as well as a vast cabin. Frameless doors also feature.

Design boss Carlo Bonzanigo says the C6 is styled to have both the ‘standing of a limo and the fluidity of a coupé’. He says that it is ‘part of the DNA of Citroën to have a two-volume luxury car,’ and admits that the classic DS, CX and SM coupé all had an influence on the shape.

High-tech fittings include digital instruments and a head-up display that projects on to windscreen. A JBL hi-fi will be optional.
