Volkswagen plans to build a single Ducati-engined XL1 to gauge reaction

The Ducati-powered VW XL1 mooted by VW board chairman Ferdinand Piëch will be prototyped, although company insiders have admitted ensuring that the vehicle is sufficiently safe for its level of performance is currently their main priority.

It has been reported that the XL Sport will be powered by a 1200cc engine that develops 187bhp at 10,750rpm and 91lb ft of torque at 9000rpm. It will be mated to a twin-clutch transmission.

“We will make one, and we will open out testing to see what the reaction is,” said an insider. “It is a good challenge for our engineers, and in simple terms quite simple; it only requires suspension changes and aero tweaking once the engine is in.

"The harder part is ensuring safety for the level of performance.”

...scott, what will they think of next? An unreliable plastic Volkswagen with an Italian motorcycle engine... Wonder who will do the electrics? Thank goodness it doesn't look there's any chrome on it. How easy will it be to get out of when it catches fire?

At the drop of a set of daft

wheel covers this car suddenly starts looking sporty and a coupe - I couldn't see either in its diesel namesake. I've said it before, I'll say it again: VW is trying too hard with EVs and hybrids producing fantastical figures. All that the motorists need is a practical car that does 100mpg in real life and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Delete the electric engine and battery pack!

....and you have something quite rapid, if not necessarily that fast. But a car like that should be about exploitable performance. An ultra light coupe. With that kind of power. Could be quite interesting. Say 600kg. and 187bhp.
