Boss of Tata Motors, which owns Jaguar Land Rover, has stepped down

Carl-Peter Forster has stepped down from his roles as chief executive and managing director of Tata Motors citing “unavoidable personal circumstances”.

Forster, who has played a key role in turning around the fortunes of Jaguar Land Rover, has spent just 18 months in the job. He is to remain on the Tata Motors board as a non-executive director at the request of Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata.

"I deeply regret that my personal circumstances make it difficult for me to continue to perform the challenging duties of managing the thriving global activities of the Tata Motors Group," said Forster, the previous boss of General Motors Europe and a former BMW board member.

“I am glad to continue my association with Tata Motors,” he added.

Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata said: "The Board respects Carl-Peter's personal circumstances that led to this move.

“We would like to thank him for his contributions to the successful development of our company in his role as group chief executive and managing director."

Tata is already hunting for a new chairman to succeed Ratan Tata, who recently confirmed he would be retiring as chairman of his Indian firm.
