Retro revival of cult classic looks to make MPVs fashionable again

The new Renault E-Space Concept, set to be revealed in full at next week’s Paris motor show, previews a new electric version of the game-changing MPV.

The bold concept is intended to channel the spirit of the 1984 original, which helped spearhead the popularity of MPV models in the pre-SUV age. While the Escape is currently in its sixth generation, the current model – which isn’t sold in the UK – has essentially morphed into a large SUV.

Renault said that the new E-Space Concept will serve as a “reboot”, and is designed as “a future-focused vision of the original”.

Few details of the E-Space Concept – and no interior pictures – have been revealed ahead of its official unveiling at the Paris show, but Renault says that it will be 4700mm long and reflects “a new approach to the design of family cars”.

The exterior images confirm the family resemblance to the original Espace, with a sharply raked front and a squared-off rear to maximise interior space. Renault claims that interior will be “generously size, high-tech and welcoming.”

While Renault has insisted the E-Space is purely a concept, it hinted that the machine was intended to “explore possible futures”, and a production version would fit with the brand’s new Futuready strategy.

While SUVs remain dominant in global sales charts, there has been a resurgence in MPVs as firms electrify their line-ups, with EV skateboard chassis well-suited to family vehicles with large interior space. Any production version of the E-Space would naturally rival the Volkswagen ID Buzz.

The E-Space Concept will be the headline act on a large stand Renault will have at its home motor show. The firm has also previewed a new version of the Renault Twingo electric city car, featuring a ‘Twingobay’ panoramic glass roof.

Featuring a 0.7m2 glass roof that filter out 99.9% of UV rays, Renault claims it will increase the sense of space in the car for passengers.

Meanwhile, Renault will also showcase the new LFP batteries that will be rolled out across its range of EVs, and display the recently revealed Renault 8 Gordini concept.
