Mercedes-AMG has named Stefan Weckbach, a key figure in bringing Porsche's first electric car to production, as its new CEO.
Weckbach will take over on 1 July next year from Michael Schiebe, who is taking on a new role leading Mercedes' production, quality and supply chain management operations.
Like Schieber, Weckbach will also assume control of Mercedes' Top End Vehicle Group, which includes the Maybach ultra-luxury brand and the growing G-Class 4x4 sub-brand.
Since 2023, Weckbach has been the head of group product strategy at the Volkswagen Group. Prior to that, though, he was the head of the Taycan product line at Porsche, leading the development of the firm's seminal EV from the Mission E concept of 2015 to showrooms five years later.
That's particularly significant, as AMG is gearing up to launch the next-generation GT 4-Door Coupé as its debut EV in 2026, with the Taycan squarely in its crosshairs.
A closely related electric super-SUV will follow shortly after and will be a natural rival to Porsche's new Cayenne Electric - another model line that Weckbach oversaw (albeit briefly) while at Porsche.
Later, Weckbach moved across to oversee development of the Mission X hypercar concept that Porsche revealed in 2023, before moving into his most recent role leading strategy for the wider Volkswagen Group - where he is credited with having played a key role in developing the company's software parternship with EV start-up Rivian.
Mercedes chief technology officer Jörg Burzer said: “By appointing Stefan Weckbach, we gain an outstanding leadership personality for Mercedes-AMG. He combines deep product knowledge with strong strategic capabilities and brings exceptionally broad experience in developing and shaping the performance and luxury segments.
"He has consistently demonstrated his ability to advance corporate and product projects with ease as well as driving forward complex vehicle programs. This combination makes him the ideal choice to develop the Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach and the G-Class product division.”
