The UK government has invested £10 million into a new Mercedes-AMG project to develop its next generation of high-performance electric motors.
The new programme will be led by Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, the Brixworth-based division that builds the German firm's Formula 1 power units.
AMG HPP will be supported by Oxford-based motor manufacturer Yasa, which was acquired by Mercedes-Benz in 2021, as well as Stoke-based gear manufacturer DePe.
Funding for the so-called Ignited project from the UK government, the German government and Mercedes-Benz totals £20 million.
It's expected to create some 150 new jobs in Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire while securing the future of another 34 existing roles.
The new motors developed are expected to enter production in three years' time, suggesting they will power the next generation of Mercedes-AMG EVs.
“This investment demonstrates the strength of our partnership with Germany in driving innovation and creating good jobs across our communities,” said business and trade secretary Peter Kyle.
“By keeping advanced manufacturing expertise here in the UK, we're building the supply chains and skills that will power our auto industry for decades to come.”
Prime minister Keir Starmer said: “This investment by Mercedes shows the real benefits of that partnership: cutting-edge innovation, more jobs and a stronger economy for Britain.”
