Tonale compact SUV and new small EV will help push sales to an all-time high, says CEO

Alfa Romeo will break its annual sales record in 2025 as it continues to broaden its range, CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has promised.

The brand has already seen sales rise on the back of the launch of the Alfa Romeo Tonale compact SUV and next year it will launch a small electric SUV as an indirect replacement for the Alfa Romeo Mito.

Alfa sales have slumped in recent years but will rise to around 80,000-90,000 this year before breaking its own record in 2025, Imparato predicted in an interview with Autocar.

The highest annual sales the brand has achieved was in 1990, when it posted a global figure of 223,643. Back then, it had a wider range of models, including the 33 hatchback, 75 saloon, 164 large saloon, GTV coupé, Spider roadster and the SZ sports car.

The Tonale and forthcoming small SUV return Alfa Romeo to the smaller segments that have traditionally boosted sales for the company.

Alfa Romeo’s best-selling model was the Alfasud small car, which together with the related Sprint coupé is the only model from the Italian marque to have exceeded a million sales.

In 2025, Alfa Romeo sales will also be boosted by the launch of the electric replacement for the Giulia saloon, which will be one of the first cars to use the Stellantis group’s STLA Large platform. Also in the pipeline is a replacement for the Stelvio SUV and a new larger SUV, both on the same STLA Large platform

Despite predicting Alfa would break its own sales record, Imparato said the brand was not focused on numbers. “I don't care about volumes because Stellantis don't need volume," he said. Instead the growth had to be profitable.

“That's how I'm paid, to be clear,” he added.

Alfa is already profitable, Imparato said, without giving figures, but the company is aiming for “double-digit” margin percentages. “Selling is one thing. Making money is another story”, he said.

Profits at Alfa Romeo would mean the freedom to introduce new models, Imparato said. He hinted that a replacement for the Giulietta compact hatchback – once a core Alfa model – could also be in the pipeline.
