The What Car? Safety Award, sponsored by Thatcham Research, is the ultimate test of vehicle safety

To win the What Car? Safety Award, sponsored by Thatcham Research, a vehicle has to prove that it is among the safest machines on the road today. That’s because the criteria for the prize are incredibly stringent, going beyond those of the Euro NCAP crash ratings.

The ten finalists for the 2017 prize have now been revealed by Autocar’s sister title What Car?, and they will be considered by a judging panel featuring some of the world’s top car safety experts.

One of the judges is Matthew Avery, director of research at Thatcham Research – the only UK facility that conducts Euro NCAP tests. To hear from him about how the award is judged, and why the Volvo XC90 and Honda Jazz claimed the top two honours in the 2016 Safety Award, watch this video.

The finalists for the 2017 What Car? Safety Award, sponsored by Thatcham Research, are:

• Alfa Romeo Giulia

• Audi Q2

• Ford Edge

• Hyundai Ioniq

• Mercedes-Benz E-Class

• Peugeot 3008

• Renault Scenic

• Seat Ateca

• Toyota Prius

• Volkswagen Tiguan

The winner will be revealed at the What Car? Awards in January 2017.
